Many art festivals also include the word “wine” in their title, and while this one does not, there will be plenty of vino, beer, soft drinks, ice cream and snow cones to keep cool, and food trucks supplying all the eats. Fiesta de Artes is well known for its non-stop entertainment. The show opens Aug. 8 with classic rock performer Rusty, followed by the Workhouse Poets, the Johnny Neri Band and the Cocktail Monkeys. The Aug. 9 opening act is Dolce Musica, with the Tsunami Band taking the stage at lunch time. The dance band California Groove also performs Sunday, with the Los Gatos-based Houserockers closing out the weekend.
Dylan doesn’t care, The 73-year-old icon keeps adding more dates to his so-called Never Ending Tour, which touches down for a three-night stand — Oct, 28-30 — at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, In honor of the great songwriter’s return to the Bay Area, we asked musicians and music lovers to share their memories of Dylan in 1/2 ballet shoes concert, “He’s such a character,” says Carney, “I think a lot of people expect him to be doing exact reproductions of the arrangements of his hits, I think the most interesting thing about him is that he doesn’t do that at all, He’s the guy who wrote the songs, He should be able to play them any way he wants..
Fourth-generation rancher Jeff Wiedemann said that although the tools and methods of ranching may have changed, love for the land and the work hasn’t. His family’s ranch was started in the 1850s by his great-grandfather, who came to San Francisco during the Gold Rush. At its height, the ranch encompassed a several-thousand-acre swath of land headquartered south of Norris Canyon, near Crow Canyon. Yet, like so many ranchers, his family’s empire of land has shrunk in size. His family sold some land off that became Norris Canyon Estates, when faced with the high cost of inheritance taxes for the land and the unpredictability of the ranching business from year-to-year.
All are 1/2 ballet shoes exceptional, but two who stand out (especially in Act 2) are Andrew Ceglio, who channels Groucho Marx (here called Serge B, Samovar) as if he were inhabiting his body. And what a body: Ceglio’s nimble movements make a cooked spaghetti noodle look stiff! His line delivery (and frequent asides to the audience) is awesome — even when some of the puns fall flat, The other ball-of-fire is pint-sized Patty Reinhart, who not only tap dances her little heart out in Act 1, but then becomes a mischievously charming Harpo Marx (called Gino) in Act 2. Her impersonation is so dead-on that you’d swear you were seeing the silent, horn-blowing Marx brother all over again, She is, in a nutshell, simply sensational..
