The semifinals of Season 23 was a real mix of emotions — sadness and loss, happiness and laughter, and, as so often happens, the elimination of a couple after their absolutely perfect night of dancing. The five couples in the competition first performed an individual dance, and then added a pro dancer for the trio dances. Talk about the overuse of the “10” paddles by the judges: of the 15 scores given by the judges for the individual dances, nine of them were perfect 10s! And the trio dances topped that when every, single performance received a perfect 10 from every judge.

Growers faced an early harvest in 2004 because it was a relatively warm year. But because it was a very light crop, the grapes ripened quickly. This year’s crop is much larger, so it won’t ripen quite as early, growers say. “We would worry that if we had a warm year and a low crop level we’d end up with excessive sugar and tannin development and a very early harvest,” said Jason Haas of Tablas Creek. “Higher yields mitigate against excessive sugar and tannins, which is great,” he said, mentioning the compound that gives a dry and bitter finish to red wine.
